Westlife的前身可以说是IOU，由其成员Shane和Mark先后认识了Kian,Nicky和Bryan后组队，Westlife的成名可谓英格兰岛上的又一传奇，他们以清纯的外表和抒情流行的演唱风格，一经出道就夺取了千百万欧陆少年的心，其势头不可阻挡，就连外来的成功组合Back Street Boys和N'SYNC等等都难以招架。成为续take that和boyzone以来又一支令人疯狂热爱的男孩组合。

    2000年Westlife继续创造辉煌，先是9月与天后Mariah Carey共同演唱了Phil Collins的经典老歌against all odds，成为他们的第六首冠军曲。之后在10月他们的第二张专辑Coast To Coast(咫尺天涯）中的单曲My love更为他们锦上添花，作为他们的第八首冠军曲，Westlife打平了The Beatles（甲壳虫乐队）连续单曲夺冠的记录，12月，他们的新单曲『what makes a man』虽然没有成为冠军单曲，但却在单曲榜前十名停留数月之久，成为有史以来他们销量最好的金唱片！2001年，Westlife在世界巡回演出，形成了强大的宣传攻势；3月份翻唱自Billy Joel的uptown girl再度夺冠，从而，他们以8首冠军单曲的成绩打破了吉尼斯世界记录！
