Today, Sony renewed its promise to ship six million PlayStation 3 units by the end of March of 2007. The company will outsource some PS3 manufacturing work to partners in China in order to meet that shipment target.
Can Sony deliver on its promise of 6 million PS3's?
Scheduled for a world-wide launch on November 17th, the PlayStation 3 has generated pre-release hype, as well as concerns about Sony's ability to meet initial consumer demand. Despite Sony's commitment to shipping six million units, it remains to be seen what, if any, shortages will exist when the console is released later this year.
The company also announced its Q1 financials today, which showed good news: profits of $277 million dollars despite a 29 percent decrease in sales of its PlayStation 2 console and so-so performance of the PSP handheld.Development costs of the PS3 also hurt the bottom line of Sony's gaming division, though those losses were offset by strong performances in the flat-panel display and digital camera product lines. The company returns to profitability after posting a roughly $62.5 million dollar loss during the same quarter last year.
