"A perfect arcade port with so much more!"

After the fate of Tobal 2, I thought seeing a port of Ehrgeiz would be wishful thinking, especially after seeing a friend of mine show me an import version. So my wishes came true after all, and it was truly worth it!


Graphics: 10/10
Smooth 60 frames-per-second rate with incredible detail for each of the characters. There's no polygon breakup or slowdown whatsoever! Aside from the fact there's no replay option, and the occasional loading time in between matches, it's almost like owning the arcade version!


Sounds: 10/10
Groans and yells compliment the great soundtrack. Although the announcer gets a little repetitive, the music makes up for that in many ways, complete with remixed tunes from the Final Fantasy series!


Controls: 10/10
Not only can you use the original configuration from the arcade, but you can fix it so that jumping is a lot easier. Unlike Virtua Fighter or Tekken, you actually move in real 3D! You can do things like jump up to another ledge and prepare an ambush for your opponent, send a box sliding at him and then grab the item that pops out, and so much more.


Replay: 10/10
Standard arcade mode, obviously, is packed inside. That's not all, though. You can also play 'Infinity Battle' a survivor game where as you fight on, you earn extra 'lives.' There's also Battle Runner, a foot race on several obstacle courses which adds an element of hand-to-hand combat. Battle Beach is a set of three mini-games similar to Track & Field. The best of the bunch, though, is the Quest mode. Koji Masuda and Clair Andrews sneak off during the tournament to find a new underground town. As you fight through the dungeons, earning Materia(!) and new items, you can switch between the two at any time so you can balance both characters' levels. In addition, not only are Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart available from the arcade, but also appearing are Yuffie Kisaragi and Vincent Valentine! Man, I could write a whole essay about the features of this game! :)

Need I say more? If you haven't played Ehrgeiz, then now is the best time to! If you have, then what are you waiting for? Go out and get it, for heaven's sakes! Just don't let it take over your life!
