April 24, 2004 - Thanks to Sony Computer Entertainment's launch of its official 2004 E3 website (read all about it here), it was revealed today that the ultra-popular online Action/RPG Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest would be getting a sequel fairly soon. Entitled Champions: Return to Arms, the new game will once again be developed by Snowblind Studios and see release in the January/February months of 2005.
***Spoilers Ahead!***
Picking up where Realms left off, Return to Arms begins with the aftermath of the destruction of the god Innoruuk. Following the Champions' victory, Innoruuk's body had been shattered into what's known as "the shards of hate", and is now valuable prizes for Innoruuk's followers as they attempt to resurrect him with the pieces. Because of this, Firiona Vie has once again called upon the champions to cut them off at the pass and eliminate all traces of Innoruuk, the shards, and his followers so that they can completely erase the dark prince forever. And so begins the player's new journey...
***End Spoiler***
While more exact details on the gameplay aspect of Return to Arms are still forthcoming, some early info hints at what we can expect; the most interesting of which being that every selectable character will offer more than 75 hours of adventure apiece. Luckily, players on the fast track will also be able to import their alter egos from the first game and can further enhance their bodies with thousands of new items, artifacts, and goodies.
For users looking to start their experience all over again, two new races will join the ranks of the human, wood elf, dark elf, high elf, and Erudite, in addition to the more than 70 new levels to explore. Other bonus features, like the host of fresh environments, new and original enemies, plenty of hidden secrets, and smarter NPCs will be available as well, not to mention secret gameplay modes, four-player Multitap support, and improved online performance.
Champions: Return to Arms will no doubt be one of Sony's biggest revelations at E3 this year, and has already become a highly anticipated prize for IGNPS2 in the few hours we've known about it.
